Abstract: The implantable prosthesis field has known significant efforts toward personalization in the
last years and, in this light, the aim of the Fab@Hospital framework was to investigate a new manufacturing paradigm for prostheses and anatomical part reconstructions inside hospitals. This Project is now focused on the orthopaedic field and on fracture fixation with internal plates, due to the dramatic impact that customized plates can achieve from both health care and economical point of view.
We propose a prototype consisting of a complete model (fractured bone and related plate) to help physicians to plan and practice hand fracture fixation. The reconstruction of the fractured bone, based on 3D imaging of a real patient, will guide the fabrication of the plate with the most suitable morphology, according to the patient anatomy and type of fracture. The plate personalization will also include the selection of the most suitable material. A business model for this prototype will be developed.
