Abstract: Flow cytometers measure the characteristics of cells flowing in a microchannel. They are fundamental instruments in biomedical sciences as they are used in routine analysis, as blood cell count, or in more complex assays in cell biology, immunology, oncology, etc. Current commercial flow cytometers have reached table-top size with very high sensitivity and throughput and are capable of performing very complex analysis, however they cost several tens of thousands euros and have a very limited portability. Translating this technology to a cost-effective and portable hardware could open new perspectives in biomedicine enabling sophisticated analysis also in remote or resource-limited environments. Building on the know-how developed in the reference project PLUS we propose here to develop a cost-effective and highly-portable plastic prototype that can be interfaced with a cell phone to implement an optofluidic imaging cytometry platform.
