Abstract: Waste from Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is the fastest growing waste in EU. Their treatment is particularly interesting due to the presence of high valuable materials (e.g. precious metal and rare easrths). The major challenges are the high volatility of the price of recovered products and the wide variety of products in WEEE, ranging from small household appliances to highly integrated high-tech systems, as well as different generations of product models to be treated. This trend is seriously mining the applicability of the traditional rigid mechanical recycling systems. One of the developed key enabling technologies in the Reference Project was an integrated hardware/software system, aimed to ensure the recycling process reconfigurability. Following these results, the objective of this project is the development of a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) platform, to support the control, operation and reconfiguration of advanced multi-material recycling system at industrial level.
