Abstract: The project starts from the consideration that, due to the even more strict international standards, the earth moving machineries will be provided of optimized engines with new and improved devices (liquid cooled EGR valves, new catalytic converters and DPF systems) which reduce the space in the engine compartment. The heat exchanger optimization is needed to obtain smaller, lighter, but at the same time more efficient, radiators and the industry has to modify his production system to be able to answer to the market requests rapidly and with tailored products.
The potential for application of structured coatings at nanoscale, has been exploited in another project (SNAPP) presented by the same research team in the FDF‐SP1‐1.2 with encouraging results. This project aims at investigating the potential of surface nano‐coating of the heat exchanger inner surface, in order to improve the overall efficiency developing also an optimized production system.
Ideas and solutions:
Design and produce nanostructured functionalized layers able to drastically change the fluid-surface interaction
Coat real heat exchanger surfaces, moving the developed technology from a laboratory to an industrial scale
Use of superhydrophobic/oleophobic nanostructured layers to increase the heat exchange.
Evaluate positive and negative aspects and investigate the industrial applicability of the proposed technology
The research team has designed and synthesized the functional layer. They have developed the precursor of the ceramic oxide obtaining a good granulometric distribution of the suspension, which has to stay below 100 nm to lead to the formation of nanoparticles and avoid aggregates
It has demonstrated the feasibility of industrial processes and the adaptability of deposition techniques to crossflow heat exchangers components.
No remarkable improvements of the functionalized heat exchanger on the standard one have been recorded, both in terms of thermal and pressure loss performance.
The lack of improvement may be due to:
- poor functionalization;
- hydrophobicity only on water but not on oil;
- damage on the nanostructured layer due to the baking for epoxy resin curing when applied on piping attachments;
- excessively high number of solid particles in the working liquid (hydraulic oil), that could have hidden the improvements inasmuch fouling may have been coated in turn the nano-structured layer or even removed it
These problem were faced in the prototype project THESIS
