Abstract: Semiconductor photocatalytic technology using either UV light or solar has recently become more prominent, owing to its mineralization aspects and its advantages if compared with other oxidative processes that require the use of potentially dangerous chemicals or disinfectants. The ProBioType II project aims to develop and integrate UV/TiO2 photocatalytic pilot plant to ProBioPol waste-to-bioplastic system. Since the last can be considered a drop-in system of a large number of industrial activities, allowing the valorization of wastewater with the production of a high value material, the integration of a photocatalytic unit for decontamination of ProBioPol reactor wastewater can further improve the efficiency and sustainability of the overall process. A proof of concept achieved at pilot scale level, will allow a sound evaluation of environmental impact as well as of other technical feasibilities and costs, triggering the proposed technology towards its commercialization.
