Abstract: The ProBioPol project developed a working lab-scale system for the production of completely biodegradable and biocompatible polyhydroxyalcanoates (PHAs) biopolymers from volatile fatty acids (VFA). The process consists in the production of e PHAs, through the bacteria aerobic fermentation of many carbon sources. The ProBioType project aims to design and build a PHA production and extraction pilot plant, based on the results achieved by ProBioPol project. ProBioType will generate a prototype plant able to integrate in one feasible unit two modules: the bioreactor, where the bacteria are cultivated and the extractor, where the PHAs are extracted through a green extraction process. Being VFA the major constituents of anaerobic fermented wastewater, a new feasible waste-to-bioplastic approach could represent a new and viable process to treat a large array of industrial or civil wastewater with very attractive expected impacts from both economic and environmental point of view.
